Wheel hardness is measured with a durometer number, most often on the A scale. The higher the number, the harder the wheel. A 78A wheel is soft and forgiving. A 101A wheel is hard, quick, and built to slide more easily on smooth surfaces.
Hardness affects how a wheel grips, rolls, slides, absorbs vibration, and handles rough ground. It does not work alone, though. Wheel diameter, width, shape, urethane formula, bearing condition, truck setup, and the condition of the concrete all matter. They maintain speed well, feel crisp on tricks, and are easier to control on ordinary pavement than ultra-hard wheels.

On rough streets, though, hard wheels can feel loud, slow, and unforgiving. Small rocks and sidewalk seams transfer straight into the board, which can kill speed or send the board sideways. If your main local ground is crusty asphalt, a 101A wheel may look right on paper but feel miserable in real life.

Match Wheel Hardness to What You Skate
